TOEFL stands for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is an internationally recognized English language proficiency test. TOEFL measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. The test assesses your skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing and provides an accurate evaluation of your English language abilities.
TOEFL is commonly used for academic purposes, especially for those who wish to study abroad. Many universities and colleges require a TOEFL score as part of their admission criteria for international students. Additionally, TOEFL scores are often used for scholarship applications and certification purposes. TOEFL scores are widely accepted by educational institutions, government agencies, and professional organizations around the world.
There are two types of TOEFL tests:
The TOEFL iBT is the most common and widely accepted version of the test. It is conducted entirely online and measures your ability to understand and use English in an academic setting. The TOEFL iBT assesses your skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
This version of the test includes various task types, such as multiple-choice questions, integrated tasks that require combining skills, and independent tasks that test your ability to express your thoughts clearly. The TOEFL iBT is administered in secure test centers equipped with computer-based testing facilities.
The TOEFL PBT is an older format of the test that is still available in select regions where internet-based testing is not accessible. Unlike the TOEFL iBT, which is entirely conducted online, the TOEFL PBT is administered in a paper-based format.
The TOEFL PBT assesses your skills in listening, structure and written expression, and reading comprehension. However, it does not include a separate speaking section. The TOEFL PBT is gradually being phased out, and most test-takers now opt for the TOEFL iBT.
It’s important to note that the TOEFL iBT is the preferred and more widely accepted version of the test, offering a more comprehensive evaluation of all language skills, including speaking.
The TOEFL exam consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The Reading section evaluates your ability to understand academic texts. The Listening section measures your comprehension of spoken English in academic settings. The Speaking section assesses your ability to express your thoughts and opinions verbally. The Writing section tests your ability to write coherent and organized responses. The total test duration is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.
